Retinal vs Retinol: Choose Your Korean Vitamin A Routine

COCOMO Curation · Vitamin A, explained
Choose the formula you can use consistently.
Retinal and retinol are both vitamin A ingredients used to improve the appearance of lines and uneven texture. Their names sound similar, but they are different ingredients. Choosing between them starts with the whole formula, your skin’s comfort and a routine you can maintain.
At COCOMO, you can choose a retinol serum, a targeted retinal booster or a serum that combines both. Here is how to read the differences and build a measured evening routine around one treatment.
Understand the names
What is the difference between retinal and retinol?
Retinoids are the wider vitamin A family. Retinol and retinal, also called retinaldehyde, are two members used in cosmetic skincare. Skin converts retinol through retinal towards retinoic acid. Retinal sits one conversion step closer.
| Ingredient | Conversion route | Shopping takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Retinol | Retinol → retinal → retinoic acid | A familiar vitamin A option; compare the concentration, base and introduction schedule. |
| Retinal | Retinal → retinoic acid | One step closer in the conversion pathway; the finished formula still determines how it feels and performs. |
A shorter pathway is not a product speed rating. It does not tell you that every retinal formula works a fixed number of times faster or will suit your skin better. Concentration, stability, delivery system and consistent use all matter.
Compare more than the headline
Three details to check before choosing.
The exact vitamin A form
Check whether the formula contains retinol, retinal or both. A combined serum is already a complete retinoid step; adding another retinol product increases the complexity.
The concentration
0.1% retinol and 0.1% retinal name different ingredients. Matching percentages do not make them equivalent doses. A percentage for a delivery complex is also different from the amount of pure retinoid.
The rest of the formula
Consider the texture, moisturising ingredients and extra technologies. CELIMAX A-Shot™ formulas contain fine sponge-derived particles, so assess that feature alongside the retinoid.
For a first vitamin A routine, prioritise an uncomplicated schedule and a comfortable formula. If your skin is already stinging, peeling or inflamed, settle that irritation before adding a retinoid.
Find your evening step

Choose one treatment to begin. These three options differ in format and technology; they are not a ladder you need to climb.

CELIMAX The Vita-A Retinol Shot Tightening Serum 30ml
Choose this serum for a retinol-led evening step focused on visible lines, pores and uneven texture. It combines 0.1% retinol, nine peptides and panthenol.
Its Hydrolyzed Sponge A-Shot™ particles distinguish it from a simple retinol serum. Factor that texture and potential tingling into your choice, especially if your skin reacts easily.
Begin with a small amount on selected areas every other evening for the first two weeks. Follow with moisturiser and increase gradually only when comfortable. Store at 3–10°C.

CELIMAX The Vita-A Retinal Shot Tightening Booster 15ml
Choose this compact treatment for focused care where visible lines, pores or uneven texture concern you. It pairs 0.1% retinal with Matrixyl® 3000 peptides and 1% panthenol.
This formula also contains Hydrolyzed Sponge A-Shot™ particles. A targeted booster needs a measured introduction; it is not an automatic first choice for easily irritated skin.
Use a small amount, about 2mm, on selected areas every other evening for the first two weeks. Increase only as tolerated. Store at 3–10°C.

PURITO SEOUL Retinol Retinal 2000 NAD+ Serum 30ml
Choose a single combined formula with 1,000ppm retinol and 1,000ppm retinal, plus NAD+, niacinamide and Ceramide NP. The dual-layer serum brings both vitamin A forms into one evening step.
Each retinoid is 0.1%. The 2,000ppm total does not mean 0.2% retinal, and this serum already counts as your retinoid product for the night.
Gently shake the closed bottle two or three times. Apply to dry skin in the evening, starting two or three nights weekly, then follow with moisturiser.

Your gradual evening routine.
-
Cleanse gently and let skin dry.
Use a gentle cleanser, pat dry and prepare for one treatment. Patch test a new formula before introducing it more widely.
-
Apply one retinoid product.
Follow its specific starting amount and schedule. Keep exfoliating acids, scrubs and additional retinoids out of the same introductory routine. The CELIMAX formulas and PURITO serum above have different directions.
-
Finish with moisturiser.
Choose a comfortable moisturiser and keep the rest of the routine familiar. Increase frequency only when skin stays comfortable. More frequent use is not a goal if it leaves skin irritated.
-
Protect skin the next morning.
Apply broad-spectrum SPF30 or higher and use shade and protective clothing outdoors. Reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following its directions.
Keep comfort central. Reduce use if redness, peeling or persistent stinging develops, and stop if irritation continues. Avoid retinoids during pregnancy. For pregnancy planning or breastfeeding, check with your clinician and follow the product’s precautions; the three formulas above advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Your questions, answered
Retinal and retinol FAQs.
Are retinal and retinol the same ingredient?
No. They belong to the retinoid family, but retinal is retinaldehyde and retinol is a different vitamin A form. Skin converts retinol through retinal towards retinoic acid.
Is retinal always stronger or faster than retinol?
The conversion route alone cannot rank finished products. Compare the actual retinoid concentration, formulation, delivery system and your skin’s tolerance. Do not compare identical percentages as equivalent doses.
Can I layer retinol and retinal together?
Begin with one retinoid product per evening. PURITO Retinol Retinal 2000 NAD+ Serum already combines both forms, so treat it as your single vitamin A step. You do not need to add a separate retinol or retinal treatment.
Should I start using a retinoid every night?
Start gradually using the chosen product’s introduction schedule. The CELIMAX formulas begin every other evening for the first two weeks; PURITO begins two or three evenings weekly. Increase only when comfortable, and reduce frequency if irritation develops.
Does tingling mean my retinoid is working better?
No. Tingling is not a measure of results. CELIMAX A-Shot™ formulas contain sponge-derived particles that can produce a tingling sensation. Persistent burning, stinging or redness is a reason to reduce or stop use.
Can I use retinoids during pregnancy?
Avoid retinoids during pregnancy. Check with your clinician when planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and follow each product’s precautions. Choose a different routine rather than assuming a low percentage makes a retinoid suitable.
Build one useful habit
Pick your treatment. Keep the routine steady.
Choose the vitamin A format that fits your skin and follow its gradual introduction schedule. A gentle cleanser, comfortable moisturiser and morning sunscreen give that evening step a practical place in your routine.
